Fiorano

The Fiorano circuit was built in the year 1972, satisfying the Company's needs for a track for tests and shakedowns of racing cars and cars from the Granturismo production on a track close to the Ferrari works, to improve and present the cars directly from the factory to the media, potential clients, drivers and guests surrounding the Prancing Horse.

The track was built with a clear contrast to circuits destined for motorsport competitions. There are no grandstands for spectators and only one car can be on the track at a time. These requirements have been part of the project since the planning stages. Enzo Ferrari, in collaboration with sponsors such as Shell, Firestone, Marelli and Heuer, wanted to build this track without changing the surroundings, creating a 3,000 metre long track between two roads close to the works. The track was built in the early 1970s with exceptional attention for every single detail, especially regarding safety, using elastic safety barriers and eliminating any potential obstacle, such as jumps, ditches or elements next to the possible racing lines. The track has been fitted with 45 timekeeping spots and CCTV to concentrate on the driver's and the car's behaviour in any situation on the track.

The tracks details regarding tortuosity and sinuosity were planned to experiment the different components of the cars in evolution or to test for motorsport competitions: the corners' radiuses reach from 13.71 to 370 metres, alternated to determine an exact correspondence between the developments in right-hand and left-hand bends; the corners, especially the two tightest ones, were planned to verify the braking system entering the corners and the engines' elasticity while exiting the corners. Further elements, such as the ascending ramp (6.50 metres slope) or the succession of linked corners with altimetric progression, are used to highlighting the stability on the racing line, the aerodynamic effects and the centrifugal forces, but also help to verify the car's handling under conditions with variable slopes. At the beginning of this century the track was fitted with an artificial watering system for tests on a wet track.
