The drivers view

One of the most interesting challenges during the planning of the simulator is to recreate the drivers' views, to facilitate a proper on-board feeling: the cockpit's detailed reproduction is only a first step in this direction, followed by optimization measures regarding the driver's view, which, in this simulator, has been planned with the Ferrari drivers' support: viewing angle, height and depth were regulated to precisely reproduce reality.

The development went even further, preventing the visual limitations experienced on 2D screens, like watching a race on TV, which usually level a circuit's inclinations. The Ferrari Virtual Academy uses an algorithm enabling the driver to naturally perceive the variation of the circuit's inclinations, unevenness and ups and downs, thus offering the best possible perception of the course of the track. While at Fiorano this technical solution can be experienced especially on the bridge and on the kerbs, with Mugello's ups and downs every corner can be driven with this special and advantageous view.

Another innovative technical solution in the Ferrari Virtual Academy is the helmet cam, which, just like those used during the winter tests by Massa and Alonso, offers an exclusive on-board sensation: the camera is installed on the helmet and reacts realistically to the track's layout and G-forces. This particular view - extremely complex and exciting to use - has been reproduced based on videos taken by the drivers, getting an idea of the tension the neck muscles have to deal with while driving a Formula 1 single-seater.
